Sustainability Dominates Large Construction Firms' Agenda: 9 in 10 Prioritize Green Practices in 2023

In the fast-evolving world of construction, sustainability has emerged as a resounding priority for 91% of large construction firms in 2023, according to groundbreaking research conducted by sustainable waste management leader, Biffa. A comprehensive survey, commissioned by Biffa and conducted by the esteemed YouGov analysis institute, reached out to over 1000 UK business decision-makers. The study delved into the construction industry's attitudes and engagement with the circular economy, offering insights into this sector's journey towards a greener future.

What was particularly striking from the research was the resounding enthusiasm for sustainability within the UK's construction sector, especially among large businesses. A noteworthy 60% of all construction firms surveyed actively participate in the circular economy, with over two-thirds (70%) acknowledging its importance in their daily operations. This figure rises to a staggering 76% among large enterprises. In fact, a remarkable 90% of large construction businesses have a well-defined sustainability strategy, outpacing their counterparts in retail, hospitality, and manufacturing.

It's also evident that waste management holds a special place in the hearts of construction businesses, with a remarkable 92% recognizing its pivotal role in achieving sustainability goals. This percentage aligns closely with the retail sector, emphasizing that construction professionals are keenly aware of their positive environmental impact through efficient waste management practices.

However, while these statistics are promising, it's essential to note that smaller and medium-sized businesses in the construction sector demonstrate slightly less enthusiasm for sustainability. While 52% of small businesses and 58% of medium-sized enterprises identify sustainability as a business priority, the sector's overall average stands at 77%. This places sustainability as the 5th out of 7 different business priorities, with cost efficiency (90%) and revenue growth (84%) taking the lead. Nevertheless, the trend showcases a positive shift towards greater engagement with sustainability as businesses grow, indicating that resources and capabilities are allocated responsibly to tackle environmental challenges.

Notwithstanding the industry's progress, there are some hurdles to overcome. Cost remains a primary barrier to sustainability, with construction professionals citing it as the chief impediment. However, a lack of infrastructure (29%) and conflicts with other business priorities (27%) also present considerable challenges. More than one-third (34%) of construction firms advocate financial incentives to support their sustainability endeavors, alongside increased access to technology (31%) and clearer legislation (29%).

This research coincides with the recent release of the "Packaging Optimisation in the Housebuilding Sector" report, a collaborative effort by the Waste & Resource Use Leadership Group of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, which offers practical advice for construction companies on optimizing their packaging practices. The report recommends various strategies, such as questioning the necessity of packaging, optimizing wrap use, transitioning from plastic to cardboard or pulp, and ensuring container sizes match their contents, among other eco-friendly practices.

Roger Wright, Waste Strategy & Packaging Manager at Biffa, underscored the significance of sustainable packaging in the housebuilding sector, stating, "The challenges and opportunities for sustainable packaging in such a sector are no less important or significant than any other, with some brilliant businesses turning insights into action."

As sustainability takes center stage in the construction industry, it's clear that the path to a greener future is paved with promise and potential, bolstered by a growing commitment to sustainable practices and innovations.
