Forest Park Casket Races: A Spooky Start to Halloween Festivities

Halloween enthusiasts in Forest Park are in for a spine-tingling treat as the much-anticipated "Forest Park Casket Races" make their eerie return on October 21. This unique event promises a day of unforgettable competition that's "out of this world."

The race kicks off at 11 a.m. on Beloit Avenue, nestled between Madison and Adams in the heart of Forest Park. Following the races, prepare for a delightful Trick or Treat adventure on Madison.

While being a spectator at these races is an absolute thrill, it's even more devilishly delightful to participate. As the event's news release states, "Teams of spirits, goblins, and ghouls compete for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, along with awards for the most frightfully funny and creepiest 'casket.' There's even a trophy for the team that comes in 'dead last.'"

The inspiration behind these races is a bit unconventional, rooted in Forest Park's history as the "Village of Cemeteries." Beneath its peaceful streets, there are approximately 50 times more residents resting eternally underground than there are above ground. When the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce was planning its grand centenary celebration back in 2012, they saw the perfect opportunity to "unearth" this quirky Casket Race event.

This Halloween, dive into the spirit of the season with the Forest Park Casket Races, and experience a unique tradition born from the village's intriguing past.
