McDonald’s security guard mops floor around homeless man in ‘disgusting’ act
A security guard working for McDonald’s has been accused of treating a homeless man with ‘disgust’ and ‘disrespect’ after he was seen mopping the floor around him while he was sitting outside a bank branch.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon in Manchester city centre, where the homeless man had been sitting outside a Nationwide branch - next door to the McDonald’s where the security guards had been working.
A witness, who did not want to be named, said he was appalled by the security guard’s behaviour and took a photo of the scene, which he shared on social media.
He said: “I was walking past and saw the security guard mopping the floor around the homeless guy. He was literally mopping around him like he was an obstacle. It was bang out of order. He was treating him like he was dirt.”
He added: “The homeless guy looked really upset and embarrassed. He was just sitting there with his head down. He wasn’t causing any trouble or asking anyone for money. He was just trying to keep warm.”
The witness said he confronted the security guard and asked him why he was doing that, but he did not get a satisfactory answer.
He said: “He just said he was doing his job and that he had to keep the area clean. He didn’t seem to care about the homeless guy at all. He was very rude and dismissive.”
He said he also spoke to the homeless man and offered him some money and a hot drink, which he gratefully accepted.
He said: “He told me his name was John and that he had been homeless for a few months after losing his job and his flat. He said he had nowhere else to go and that he was trying to find some help. He was very polite and humble. He didn’t deserve to be treated like that.”
The witness said he hoped his photo would raise awareness of the plight of homeless people and the need for more compassion and support.
He said: “I think it’s disgusting that a big company like McDonald’s would allow their staff to treat homeless people like that. They should be ashamed of themselves. Homeless people are human beings too. They need help, not humiliation.”
A spokesperson for McDonald’s said they were aware of the incident and were making enquiries.
They said: “We are very sorry to see this photo and are looking into it as a matter of urgency. We do not condone this behaviour and are taking the matter very seriously. We are in contact with the security company who provide our guards and are seeking to speak to the individuals involved.”
