| Nurturing Horticultural Interest: Big Tex Urban Farm Empowers High School Interns to Cultivate Urban Agriculture |
When you visit the State Fair of Texas, you might typically associate it with indulgent treats on sticks and delightful fair foods. Yet, amidst the bustling fairgrounds at Fair Park, something green and sustainable is growing at Big Tex Urban Farm.
Drew Demler, Director of Horticulture at the State Fair of Texas, emphasizes, "Everyone needs to eat, and it's crucial to understand where your food originates."
At Big Tex Urban Farms, a unique initiative is in place. High school interns from City Lab High School in Dallas have joined forces with the urban farm to explore the realm of urban farming and, in turn, educate curious fairgoers.
City Lab High School senior and intern, Charity Berhe, highlights the advantages of urban farming, saying, "It's a lot more reliable than traditional farming. Given the challenges posed by climate change and soil erosion, environmental concerns are paramount. Seasons might become more unpredictable, but the greenhouse will remain consistent."
This sustainable approach ensures a shorter journey from the urban farm to the dining table, significantly reducing food waste.
Drew Demler further emphasizes the importance of this experience, "When visitors step into our urban farm, they witness the beauty of something growing. Many are encountering horticulture for the first time. In our fast-paced urban lives, we have distanced ourselves from nature. Our aim is to rekindle that connection."
Berhe and her fellow intern colleagues are actively engaged in preparing presentations to elucidate the intricacies of urban farming systems to the fair's visitors. Moreover, select interns will have the opportunity for hands-on experience through spring internships at Big Tex Urban Farms.
Megan James, Career and Technical Internship Coordinator at City Lab High School, underscores the significance of this endeavor, stating, "This is incredibly important. In today's world, the emphasis is on locally grown, homegrown produce in your kitchen. It's not something you'd typically associate with a fair."
For Charity Berhe, it's all about priorities, "Honestly, what we're doing here is more vital. I find it truly remarkable."
