Uber is actively exploring new avenues within the travel industry, as revealed by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi during the concluding session of the 2023 Skift Global Forum.

Khosrowshahi disclosed that a significant portion of Uber's user base, approximately 22% to 24%, engages in travel beyond their home markets. In the previous year alone, this translated to an impressive 700 million trips.

"These Uber riders are essentially travelers, constituting a substantial and dedicated travel-oriented audience," Khosrowshahi emphasized.

The experimental forays into travel primarily originate from the Uber app in the UK. Uber expanded its presence in the UK rideshare sector through a strategic partnership with Hopper, enabling users to book domestic and international flights directly within the app. This addition complements Uber's existing travel offerings, which include partnerships with Viator for tours and activities.

Additionally, the UK boasts a unique service known as "Uber Boat by Thames Clippers." Khosrowshahi explained that this initiative aimed to integrate travel functionality into Uber within a leading market like the UK, resulting in promising outcomes.

Among the users in the UK who have utilized Uber for bus or train bookings, an impressive 60% have become repeat customers. Similarly, 30% of users have repeatedly booked flights through Uber.

Uber's approach to scaling its business does not involve reducing driver earnings through the app. Instead, the company is focused on substantial growth while maintaining payment standards for its drivers.

Khosrowshahi emphasized the remarkable growth Uber has experienced, as demonstrated by its first-ever operating profit reported in August. Notably, ride numbers in the U.S. and Canada have rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, underlining the company's resurgence in the rideshare industry.
